THE HERO and MRS. MACINTOSH
Friend, as I reflect on the story I feel led to share with you today, it comes to my mind that each of us human beings desperately want to feel wanted; and to believe there is someone who would be deeply pained if we weren’t a part of their life. Each of us likes to feel tender moments when someone holds us; to feel tender lips softly against our cheek; and to hear whispers that life would be so empty without us. To live without these feelings is to live a lonely life.
Some years ago, Jerry Harvill told a story about the novelist Marjorie Byrd who was visiting the home of her friend, Mrs. MacIntosh, in the Western Highlands of Scotland. During her visit a fierce storm caused a gale to howl around the cottage, located just outside the village, where she was staying.
The husband of Mrs. MacIntosh was away on business. And there was a knock on the door at the height of the storm. When they opened the door, they were greeted by a family friend, a young boy, who was severely disabled and soaking wet. This young man had walked quite a distance to check on Mrs. MacIntosh, who was deeply touched by his concern for her well-being; and she immediately brought him inside the house so that he could dry himself and his clothes by the warmth of the fire.
At first, the boy, with genuine concern, asked Mrs MacIntosh and her guest, Marjorie Byrd, “Aren’t you both afraid?” – The novelist was about to say “No,” when Mrs. MacIntosh spoke the words every boy longs to hear: “Of course we were afraid,” she said, “But now that you’re here, it’s alright, because now we have a man in the house!”
And with those words ringing in his ears, the young boy straightened his twisted frame, looked at the two women, and said with a firm voice, “Well then, I’d best be checking to make sure everything is safe.”
Friend, Christians will tell you that Jesus Christ had this quality. Without being naive or unrealistic, Jesus could look past the failures of people He knew and gladly, with great warmth, express His gratitude for what they gave Him.
If you’re reading this story and are thinking that brightening up other people’s lives is too big a task, let me encourage you today, to make up your mind to do something about helping others to feel good about their life!
Try helping someone to feel they have something to offer. Tell them that they enrich your life. Somehow, just knowing they are in this world with you makes the challenges and heartaches of this life much easier to bear, and the joys of this life that much more joyous. Let them know they make a difference!
As I conclude today’s message, I sincerely hope you can realize that you are special to God. And that’s not all! You are special to others too, especially when you use your talents to serve them.
Friend, you are someone special to God. And that’s not all. You are special to others, too, when you use your gifts to serve them. And just in case you haven’t realized it, there is one place where your worth does not depend on your wealth, position, or talent. It is in the Family of Christ, where every member is needed and every person is important. You see, according to God’s standards each of us is “Someone Special.”
If you would like to know just how special you are, upon your request we would be happy to send you a small booklet titled “You are Someone Special.”

FRIEND,
“The worth of our lives comes not in what we do,
Or who we know,
But by WHO WE ARE,
