The Story of the Messiah

"Did She Know?" https://www.andiesisle.com/did.she.know.html “When she kissed her little baby, she kissed the face of God!”

The Story of the Messiah

Friends, upon opening a packet bound in parchment, which was delivered by a servant one morning in the summer of 1741, George Frederick Handel was delighted to find pages of text written by the poet Charles Jensen. Jensen had long been interested in seeing stories of the Bible vitalized by Handel’s music.

Handel had written music for work by Jensen in earlier years without great success; so perhaps he was not pleased with the prospect of any further involvement. However, he soon knew this script was different. Old and New Testament quotations had been spun skillfully to tell the story of Christ’s birth, sacrifice, and resurrection. The title was written boldly on the script--- The Messiah.”

At this point in his life Handel was 56 years of age. His music had thrilled kings and queens and had failed—at times—to pay for even a meagre lifestyle. Nothing of late seemed to grab hold of his heart. It was said that he had lost his inspiration and that his music was behind the fashion. Then The Messiah came into his life!

With an opportunity to present a charity performance, Handel decided that it was appropriate for The Messiah to help those in need. He began writing the music for this work in August of 1741 and in twenty-three days an oratorio which has thrilled audiences for over 250 years was complete.

Working with The Messiah became a spiritual journey for Handel. The work begins with a prophecy from Isaiah, “Comfort ye, my people.” This promise of Scripture seemed to draw Handel to the task. He was deeply inspired! So much so, that Handel continued to dedicate the proceeds from a yearly presentation of The Messiah to the needs of others.

One man renewed his life and spirit by joining into a partnership with The Messiah to give the world an accompaniment to Scripture—to lend a special glory to the Word for all people and all time. Handel died in 1759 on the 17th anniversary of the first performance of his beloved tribute to the Messiah.

Today we may marvel at the beauty and majesty that continues to live in words and music. But those who live in daily partnership with Jesus Christ perhaps understand a little better. We are accustomed to seeing and being a part of the beauty and power created by Jesus through ordinary people.

If you would like to know more about how you can experience the beauty and power of Jesus in your own life, we’d be glad to help you by sending a FREE booklet titled Who is this Jesus?” To receive your copy of this booklet, simply write to Discovering A BETTER LIFE, P.O.
