UNSINKABLE FAITH!
Friends, the story of Frank Lucks Tower is so bizarre, so unlikely, it’s the basis of a famous TV series.
It all began in April 1912 when Tower was a stoker, one of the men shovelling coal into the insatiable boilers of the Titanic as it steamed into the icy grip of history via harm’s way. He survived the great ship’s suffocating surrender to the North Atlantic, but that was just the beginning.
According to Charles Pelegrino’s book - “Her Name, Titanic” - Tower was working two years later on the Empress of Ireland when it collided with another ship in the St. Lawrence River. The crash gashed a jagged hole in the side of the Empress.
When she rolled onto her side, mortally wounded, the ship sank in minutes, partly because all the port holes were open on an exceptionally hot night. More than 2,000 people died in what became the world’s worst peacetime maritime disaster. Tower escaped, virtually alone.
Against all odds, the seaman’s next job was aboard the now famous Lusitania, which was sunk by German submarines in 1915, leading to America’s involvement in World War One. When the first torpedo struck, Tower was heard to shout, “Now what?!” he swam to a lifeboat, reportedly vowing each stroke of the way to forsake the sea and take up farming.
Three of history’s most famous sea tragedies and Tower was caught in all of them. His incredible story inspired a young write to pen a TV screenplay called Lone Survivor. It was so popular it paved the way for an entire series. The writer was Rod Sterling. The series became The Twilight Zone.
Many of us can relate to Frank Tower. We know what it’s like to feel the anger and exasperation that arises when we’re hit by one thing after another.
Just when we think it can’t possibly get any worse, it does. That’s because trouble and turmoil are inevitable.
Friend, our only choice is whether we’ll sink in a sea of disappointment and despair, or trust God to keep us afloat once we’re thrown into dark and dangerous waters. He’s the key to becoming unsinkable, even in the face of the unthinkable.
